When You Jump

When you take the leap most won't, even those closest to you will resist. Not because you'll fail—because they fear they would.

By Jaime Calaf

Sometimes it's you against the world. Even those closest to you won't understand. They'll try to talk you out of it or downgrade what you're attempting because deep down, they're managing their own insecurities. If they'd fail at something similar, they assume you will too. And if you succeed? That threatens their ego. Where does that leave them?

That's the nature of pursuing self-mastery. Whether it's a creative pursuit—acting, writing, painting—or something else entirely, you'll face platitudes and mockery. Most people hate that you decided to take the chance they won't take. You jumped off the cliff when they stayed on solid ground.

You took the risk. They dread it because they fear exposing themselves to the world.
